The Korean Cultural Center Los Angeles (KCCLA, Director Haedon Lee) proudly present 'Southern Korea, A Space of Lines', a special exhibition exploring the enduring artistic traditions of Korea’s Honam region and their contemporary reinterpretations. The exhibition opens on Wednesday, October 28, at 6:00 PM in the KCCLA Art Gallery.
Guided by the theme “Beyond Time, Tradition Becomes Contemporary Art,” the exhibition explores how the artistic traditions of the Honam region—including Korean painting and calligraphy—have been reinterpreted through contemporary perspectives and expanded into new forms of artistic expression.
For centuries, Honam has been celebrated as a cultural and artistic heartland of Korea, with a rich tradition of painting, calligraphy, and the arts. From influential modern masters such as Heo Baek-ryeon, Oh Ji-ho, and Cho Bang-won to contemporary artists today, generations of artists have continued to revisit and reinterpret tradition through the lens of their own time.
Bringing together works that reflect this continuing artistic dialogue, the exhibition traces how the spirit and traditions of Honam have evolved into new visual languages. By bringing tradition and contemporary art into conversation, Southern Korea, A Space of Lines offers an opportunity to explore the diverse artistic possibilities that emerge across time, place, and artistic practice.
Southern Korea, A Space of Lines will be on view from October 28 through December 2, 2026, at the KCCLA Art Gallery on the second floor.
